Long before he ever stepped into a dental office as a professional, he discovered his love for helping children while coaching competitive swimming. “During high school and college, I coached swimmers ranging in age from 5 to 18,” Dr. Rich said. “I spent countless hours on the pool deck encouraging young athletes, helping them overcome challenges and celebrating their successes.” Those experiences taught him how meaningful it can be to help children build confidence and conquer fears. “Coaching taught me that every child is different,” Dr. Rich explained. “Some kids need encouragement, some need patience and some just need someone who believes in them. The same is true in pediatric dentistry.”
While his early academic path pointed in a different direction, Dr. Rich eventually realized that his greatest fulfillment came from working directly with children and families. A graduate of Bucknell University, where he earned a degree in electrical engineering and graduated summa cum laude, he ultimately chose to pursue pedi- atric dentistry, combining his love of science and problem-solving with his passion for helping kids. After completing dental school at the University of Pennsylvania, he went on to complete a two-year pediatric dentistry residency at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children, where he has served in leadership and teaching roles since 2018, mentoring future pediatric dentists and helping guide the program through important transitions.
Those experiences provided extensive clinical expertise, but they also reinforced his belief that pediatric dentistry is fundamentally about relationships. Children who feel comfortable and supported are more likely to develop healthy habits and positive attitudes toward dental care that last a lifetime.
