DIY Ornaments for Kids

Newtown Square Friends & Neighbors, December 2022

Ingredients Needed for Clay:
• 2 cups baking soda
• 1 cup corn starch
• 1 1/4 cups water

Other Materials Needed:
• Rolling pin
• Cookie sheet
• Parchment paper
• String/Ornament hook
• Paint
• Paint brushes
• Glitter, beads, extra
decorating supplies

Directions:
1. Combine all clay ingredients into a pan and place on the stove on medium.
2. Stir continuously and watch to make sure the clay doesn’t burn. Once it’s the consistency of mashed potatoes, remove from heat.
3. Place the clay onto parchment paper and cover it with a damp paper towel so it doesn’t dry out as it cools.
4. Once cooled, use a rolling pin to roll out the clay. Use cookie cutters to cut out your ornament shapes.
5. Place ornaments on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Make sure to make a hole at the top of each ornament for the string/ornament hanger to go through.
6. Bake at 200 degrees fahrenheit for 40 minutes. Keep an eye on them to make sure they don’t brown.
7. Once fully baked, allow them time to cool. Then, get creative! Paint them, add glitter, whatever you want.
8. To finish the ornaments off, add string or ornament hangers.
