Did you know that Newtown Square is home to a sprawling 240-acre hidden gem on Bishop Hollow Rd? Perhaps you’ve noticed some sheep grazing in a pasture on your way to the Newtown Edgmont Little League fields. But have you ever wondered what is nestled down the long driveway?
If you’re curious, you’ll have the opportunity to find out this summer as Garrett Williamson hosts the 6th annual Newtown Square Farmers Market, which will take place every other Friday from the end of May through September.
Opening Day for The Newtown Square Farmers Market will be Friday, May 29th, from 4pm to 7pm. Pam Purser is the Market Manager and is pleased by the amount of vendors, foods and handcrafted goods that will be offered. “We are so excited to be joining forces with Urban Roots Farm, who lease their land from Garrett Williamson. That means we will have lots of amazing produce this season. Other local vendors will be selling honey, pickles, baked goods, sourdough bread and fresh juices,” she remarked. “The list goes on with vendors offering flowers, soaps, beauty supplies, olive oil, liquor, pasta and sauces and prepared foods like pizza, pretzels, Greek specialties, chicken salad, empanadas and desserts.” Pam added that there will also be a rotating list of artisan vendors selling woodworking, textile crafts and other art.
The Farmers Market will also feature live musical entertainment, kids’ story times and plenty of room to sit, relax and let the kids run and play. Visitors can also learn about community groups like Newtown Square in Bloom and the Garrett Williamson Foundation.
Pam said, “The farmers market has received great support from the community and Newtown Township over the past few years, and we are thrilled that people want it to continue! It really feels like we’ve filled a need in our community for connection, conversation and fun.” Pam added that she would like visitors to know that the Farmers Market is committed to Newtown Square’s mission of promoting sustainability by asking vendors to reduce plastic use and encouraging shoppers to bring reusable bags.
The Farmers Market committee appreciates the commitment of all the volunteers who help each week. They are also very grateful for our friends at Garrett Williamson. Pam said that they are always welcoming new volunteers to help set up, direct traffic, clean up and promote the market. “It’s going to be so much fun, and I encourage everyone to come out and join the party!”
